About

Sushana River heads at 63.4200N 149.4700 W and flows northwest to Toklat River, 12 miles northeast of Chitsia Mountain and 40 miles southwest of Nenana.

Sushana River is probably best known for the "Magic Bus," "Sushana Bus," or "Fairbanks City Transit Bus #142," made famous by Chris McCandless and the movie "Into the Wild." The bus sits near the head waters of the Sushana River so the Sushana isn't much of a concern if your objective is getting to the bus. Many people flock along the Stampede Trail to follow in the footsteps of Chris McCandless. Unsurprisingly some of these people have to be rescued themselves each year.

History of Sushana River

Tanana Indian name reported in 1910 by L. M. Prindle, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The Indian name, "Toklat," was originally reported for it in 1905 by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The stream was called "Knight Creek" from 1916 to 1925, by prospectors' possibly referring to a headwater branch.
