History

Originally called "Mumtrak Creek" in 1909 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) on Chart 8802 for Mumtrak, the Eskimo village at its mouth. It was called" South Fork Goodnews River" in 1919 by G. L. Harrington (in Brooks, 1921, pl. 7), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
