Eskimo name "Sawanukto" reported in 1901 by S. J. Marsh, prospector, to mean "strong current" (Brooks, 1906, p. 289). Leffingwell (1919, p. 99) referring to variant spellings, states, "The writer prefers Shagavanuktok."
