Historyaccording to the 1883 Coast Pilot (p. 323) the name was published in 1836 by Captain F. P. Lutke, Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), as "Pogromnoi Volcan". 1847, as "Sopka Pogromnaya," meaning "desolation peak." Aleut name, according to Grewingk (1850, p. 177) is "Kugidach Jagutscha."
