HistoryNamed by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) and published in 1908 on Chart 8000. The feature was named for Elihu Root, 1845-1937. Root was a member of the Alaska Boundary Tribunal and U.S. Secretary of War, 1899-1904, under Presidents McKinley and Roosevelt; Secretary of State, 1905-09, under President Roosevelt; and U.S. Senator from New York 1909-15. He was also a member of the Hague Tribunal.
