Chilkat Range in Detail.

Getting There

To get to the Chilkat Range, one must first get to Haines. From there you can take a boat, or kayak across Chilkat Inlet, or Chilkat River and then proceed on foot (through the brush, or up a stream) if crossing the river. If crossing at the inlet one will be at the foot of the mountains unless, they cross to Glacier Point.

Another option is the local air taxi service which can land you on a glacier or on Glacier Point.

About

At 70 miles long the Chilkat Range extends south along the Chilkat Inlet, Lynn Canal, and on to Icy Strait. It servers as the eastern border to Glacier Bay National Park.

Known for being a heli-skiing dream the Chilkat Range is the impressive back drop to the town of Haines. These mountains have made their way into many films, magazines, and blogs.

The range also host a healthy population of mountain goat.

History

The range obtained its name in 1879 by the USGS, to represent the local Tlingit tribe.
