Reported in 1950 by D. M. Hopkins, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS); "The name 'Lava Lake' was applied by the 11th Weather Squadron, U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) to a weather station operated on the east shore of the lake in 1945."
