HistoryThe name is of Dena’ina origin, meaning “tail extends-out lake†(Board on Geographic Names (BGN) case research). Tanaina Indian name reported in 1927 by R. H. Sargent, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS); "obtained from Chilligan, an old Tyonek Indian."
