History

Aleut name published by Lieutenant Sarichev (1826, map3), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), as "O(strov) Samalga," or "Samalga Island." Father Veniaminov (1840, v. 1, p. 157) reported that in 1764 there was a settlement on this island containing not less than 400 people.
