History of Pinnacle Island

Named by Capt. Cook (1785, p. 491) RN, on September 23, 1778 who wrote "a small island, whose elevated summit terminates in several pinnacle rocks." Capt. Lutke (1836, p. 342), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), translated this to "Ile de Tours (towers)" or Ile des Fleches (spires)." The Russians transliterated the name to O(strov) Pyenikl (Sarichev, 1826, map 3) and O(strov) Pinekl (Tebenkov, 1852, map 20).
