HistoryNamed in 1942 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) for Rear Admiral Lester Anthony Beardslee, 1836-1903, who as commander of the U. S. S. Jamestown, surveyed various Alaskan coves and harbors in 1879-1880, and who is supposed to have been the first to apply the name "glacier Bay."
