Name published in 1895 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS). Named "turnagain Island" on April 20, 1794, by Captain George Vancouver (Wagner, 1937, p. 521). The Tanaina Indian name was published in 1847 as "Ostrov Mushukhli" or "Mushukhli Island" on Russian Hydrographic Dept. Chart 1378.
