History of Deer Island

This is a translation of the Russian name "/strov/ Olenei" meaning "deer island" published by Lieutenant Sarichev (1826, map 3), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN). Father "Itxayak" meaning "deer," according to R. H. Geoghegan. In 1888 the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries (USBF) Veniaminov (dict., 1846, p. 35) lists the name "Itkhayak" from the Aleut called it Deer Island.
