on Beaufort Sea coast, in Plover Is., 23 mi. E of Barrow, Arctic Plain. 3 miles long.
HistoryNamed by Commander Thomas E. L. Moore, Royal Navy (RN), in 1849-50 for one of his officers on His (Her) Majesty's Ship (HMS) Plover (Leffingwell, 1919, p. 97). The Eskimo name is "Iglurak" meaning, in a general sense, "sod house like" because two mounds on the island appear like sod houses from a distance. Leffingwell (1919, p. 95 ) gives the meaning as "small iglu."
