HistoryLocal name published in the 1950's by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). 1898 by Captain W. R. Abercrombie, USA, who spelled it "Chestalena." This is the same stream that Lieutenant H. T. Allen (1887, map), USA, called in 1885 "Liebigstag," for a local Indian chief (p. 58). Mendenhall (1905, p. 21), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), says that this latter name still had limited use as late as 1902.
