History of Howard Hill

Named by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for Ensign W. L. Howard, U.S. Navy (USN), of Lieutenant G. M. Stoney's Naval Expedition of 1885. They passed along the foot of this hill about May 22, 1886, on the expedition from Ft. Cosmos, on the Kobuk Fiver, to Point Barrow. The name first appears on a fieldsheet by Gerald FitzGerald, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in 1924.
