HistoryNamed by members of the Juneau Icefield Research Project in 1964 for Dr. Edwrd Thiel (1928-1961), glaciologist and geophysicist. He was chief seismologist with the Arctic Institute of North America, co-leader of the Fletcher Ice Shelf Traverse in Antarctica, chief scientist for Antarctic airborne geophysical operations, and assistant proffesor of geophysics at the University of Minnesota.
