History of Sarichef Strait

Lieutenant G. A. Sarichev, Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), on the Slava Rossii (Glory of Russia), anchored here July 14, 1791 (Old Style (O.S.) calendar). The water passage was afterward named for him by the Russians; "Pro(liv) Sarycheva," or "Sarychev's Strait" (Tebenkov, 1852, map 20).
