HistoryThomas Simpson (1843, p. 145) wrote, August 2, 1837, "The land, soon turned sharply off to SSW, forming an acute angle, well termed Point Tangent." However, it appears on his chart as Tangent Point. Commander Maguire's map (Great Britain, 1854, facing p. 186) gives the Eskimo name "Maghi."
