HistoryNamed in 1826 by Captain Beechey (1831, map on p. 328), Royal Navy (RN), for Charles Lewis of his party. According to U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) in 1950, the Eskimo name is "Ee=ree=nick (Irinik)" meaning "falling rocks."
