on S coast of Alaska Peninsula, Aleutian Range
HistoryNamed "Stepovakho," or "Stepof's Bay," by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) in 1888, possibly for Stepanof, a Russian American Company captain who cruised in the Shumagin Island prior to 1835. Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 24) called it "Zal (iv) Zakharova" or "Zachary Bay."
