History

Named by Captain George Vancouver, Royal Navy (RN), on September 2, 1793, after John Stewart, master's mate on the ship Discovery, "who made a good survey of it." Vancouver was anchored here from August 22 to September 5, 1793 (Wagner, 1937, p. 417).
