Named in 1928 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) for "the vessel Elena in which (Captain M. D. ) Tebenkiv (sic), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN) sailed for Sitka in 1835 to carry on explorations in Alaska."
