History

Named Comptrollers Bay by Captain Cook (1785, v.2, p. 353), Royal Navy (RN), about May 11, 1778, probably for Maurice Suckling who was comptroller of the Royal Navy when Cook left on this expedition (Wagner, 1937, p. 382). The name was adopted by Captain Vancouver. The Russians transliterated the name to "Zal Kontrolyer" on Hydrographic Dept. Chart 1378, dated 1847.
