HistorySpanish name meaning "estuary of Quadra" given in 1792 by Jacinto Caamano for Lieutenant Juan Francisco de Bodega y Quadra, who took part in expeditions and made surveys in southeast Alaska in 1775-79; this name was adopted by Captain George Vancouver, Royal Navy (RN), who explored this estuary on August 6, 1793 (Wagner, 1937, p. 404).
