Named by Wh. H. Dall, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS), in 1879, for the Spanish navigator Don Francisco Antonio Maurelle who, under the command of Don Juan de la Bodega y Quadra, made and took part in surveys in this region from 1775 to 1779.
