Named by Lawrence Martin, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in 1923 for Emmanuel de Margerie, 1862-1953, French geologist, who visited Glacier Bay in 1913. Margerie was a famous geographer and geologist, who published many scientific papers including several on the geology of North America.
