History

Named in 1879 by W. H. Dall, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS), for Captain Michael Dmitrievich Tebenkov, governor of the Russian American colonies in 1845-50, whose "Atlas of the Northwest Coast of America" was used extensively in the preparation of this dictionary.
