HistoryNamed by Captain George Vancouver, Royal Navy (RN), after its discovery by Lieutenant Joseph Whidbey on August 13, 1794, for Holkham, a town in Norfolk, England (Wagner, 1937, p. 392). The Tlingit Indian name is "Sum Dum."
