Named by Commander R. W. Meade, U.S. Navy (USN); published in 1869 on Hydrographic Chart 225 as "Round Islet (or islets)." Meade may have thought the group to be one island. The name was restricted to the southernmost and largest of the islands by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) in 1891 Coast Pilot (p. 147).
