HistoryLocal name derived from the Chena River near headwaters of which the hot springs are located. The springs were reported in 1907 by C. C. Covert, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and the name was reported in 1912 by Ellsworth and Davenport (1915, p. 59), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
