HistoryLocal name reported in 1904 by H. C. Fassett, U.S. Bureau of Fisheries (USBF). Hollis post office was established in 1901 and discontinued in 1942 (Ricks, 1965, p. 26). The village "started as a mining community after the turn of the century but has now swung to logging. A research center is maintained here by U.S. Orest Service" (Alaska Sportsman, 1962, no. 12, p. 28).
