History

Schrader (1904, map), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), gave the name "Kupig River" for this stream. U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) reported the present form of the name in 1951. The name probably means "big old river" (Kugpakruaq).
