Historyin 1885, Lieutenant Allen (1887, p. 101), USA, applied the name "Fickett River" to what is now called the John River in honor of Private Frederick W. Fickett, U.S. Army Signal Corps, who was a member of Lieutenant Allen's small party. Lieutenant Allen's naming in this case, and in order to save the historical name T. G. Gerdine, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), transferred the name "Fickett" to this stream in 1899.
