HistoryProspectors' name reported in 1899 by D. C. Witherspoon (in Schrader and Brooks, 1900, map 2) U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The 1900 "Map of Nome Peninsula" by J. M. Davidson and B. D. Blakeslee shows two streams, "Dog" and "Ryan," heading on Cone Mountain and flowing SW to Cripple River. Recent topographic maps do not show these streams.
