Eskimo name, meaning "jade," written "Shung-nack" by Lieutenant G. M. Stoney, U.S. Navy (USN), in 1885, and "Shingnek" by W. C. Mendenhall, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in 1901. Jade is found near its headwaters. See Jade Mountain.
