The easiest way to get to Sheep River is to charter a flight from one of the many air taxi operations in Talkeetna. The cheapest option is to take a powered jet or air boat up the Talkeetna River. There is no cleared trail to the river.
Sheep River heads at an unnamed glacier then flows northwest through the Talkeetna Mountains to Talkeetna River, 11 miles NE of Talkeetna.
Sheep River can be floated but it is recommended to put in around where the two forks meet. Beginning at the glacier it's said to be Class VI through the gorge, while others assess it as a Class IV. Beginning floats at the fork convergence is a Class III.
Naming: Sheep River was a local name recorded in 1906 by T.G. Gerdine and R.H. Sargent, USGS, as yet another "Sheep Creek."
