eskimo name reported in 1891 as "Noghelin Painga," meaning "mouth of the Noghelin," by A. B. Schanz in 1890 Census. The present spelling was reported in 1900 by A. G. Maddren, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and represents pronunciation of the Eskimo name by English-speaking prospectors.
