HistoryEskimo name reported in 1890 as "Kokhtuli," meaning "woods," by A. B. Schanz in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. river was spelled "Kakhtul" on the 1890 Census map. called "Kakhtut" in 1898 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS). U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), published it as the "Kakhtul River." show the lower part as "Swan River."
