HistoryEskimo name reported in 1901 as "Ipnichuk" by Mendenhall (1902, p. 30), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Mendenhall said that the name means "big cliff"; however, the present spelling of the name would indicate it may mean "new salt water."
