HistoryNamed by Josiah Edward Spurr (1900, p. 50), geologist, and William Schuyler Post, topographer, while on a U.S. Geological Survey reconnaissance in SW Alaska in 1898. Spurr wrote on June 27, 1898, "This stream, which we named Happy River, we worked...in constant risk of losing our boats and provisions, and succeeded in advancing only about half a mile."
