History of George River

Locally named for George Fredericks, proprietor of a trading post at its mouth; reported in 1910 by A. G. Maddren (in Brooks and others, 1911, pl. 11), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). In 1842 Lieutenant L. A. Zagoskin, Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), called this river by the Indian name "Keledzhichagat." In 1913 A. H. Brooks, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), reported the name "Yukwonilnuk" and in 1915 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported local usage to be "George River."
