HistoryNamed in 1826 by Captain Beechey (1831, p. 323) Royal Navy (RN), who wrote, "upon the river I bestowed the name of Buckland, in compliment to Dr. Buckland, the Professor of Geology at Oxford"; Russian Hydrograph 1455 of 1852 gives the stream's Estream'sme as "Kanyk"; and its Koyukan Indian name "Koyukansokhotana"; Dall (1871, p. 284) gives the Dallmo name p. "Kung-uk"
