History of Mount Jarvis

Named for Lieutenant Daniel H. Jarvis, U.S. Revenue-Cutter Service (USRCS), who conducted an overland expedition for the relief of the whaling fleet "frozen in" at Point Barrow. The expedition consisted of a herd of 448 reindeer which passed near this mountain about March, 1898. The mountain may have been named by P. S. Smith and J. B. Mertie, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), about 1925.
