Named in 1901 by T. G. Gerdine (in Collier, 1902, pl. 12), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), for Alfred Hulse Brooks, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), who made a brief reconnaissance of this area in 1900 (Brooks, 1901, p. 13).
