History

Eskimo name reported in 1885 by Lieutenant Stoney, (1900, p. 53), U.S. Navy (USN), as Now-tow-vuk-toy and by Lieutenant J.C. Cantwell (in Healy, 1887, p. 34), U.S. Revenue-Cutter Service (USRCS), as Nor-to-rok-tee and Nor-tah-rok-tah. Mendenhall (1902, p. 25), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), established the spelling as Nutuvukti.
