15 mi. SE of Crooked I. and 35 mi. E of Hagemeister I., eastern-most of Walrus Islands, between Kulukak and Togiak Bays, in Bristol Bay.
HistoryThis island is thought to be the one named by Captain Cook (1785, v. 2, p. 431), RN, on July 12, 1778, on account of its shape. Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 4), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), called it "Os(trov) Krugloi," meaning "round island." Lieutenant Sarichev (1826, map 3), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), called it "Os(trov) Morzh," meaning "walrus island." Tebenkov and Sarichev gave the native name as "Kayashek" and "Kayashik," respectively.
