HistoryLocal name reported in 1952 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Its earlier name "Leah Island" was given by steamboat pilots after the steamboat Leah built at Saint Michael about 1895 and named for Leah Shingleberger, mother-in-law of Captain Gustav Niebaum of the Alaska Commercial Company.
