HistoryRussian name probably given by Captain Von Krusenstern (1827, sheet 18), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), as Khwostov, for Nikolai Alexandrovich Khwostov, a Russian naval officer, who explored Alaska in 1802-04 with G. I. Davidov. Captain Lutke (1836, p. 326), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), applied the name "Khvostoffile" to the entire group of islands that include Khvostof.
