Descriptive name given by Captain James Cook (1785, v. 2, p. 364), Royal Navy (RN) on May 18, 1778, who said "being entirely free from snow, and covered with wood and verdure, on this account they were called Green Islands." This feature was called "Os(trov) Nikolay," meaning "Nicholas Island" by Sarichev (1826, map5).
